ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Original plein-air landscape oil painting. This unique and colorful painting captures the beauty and architecture of a local farm in early fall. As I stood in this field, I was captivated by the lines leading directly back to the horizon of barns and outbuildings. There was a simplicity to the landscape which I found appealing. Through more intense use of color and keeping the shapes minimized, I aimed to articulate the rich, gentle energy that existed within the vista. It's often a sensation I experience while painting outdoors. The painting has the spontaneity in brushwork characteristic of painting outdoors where things change all the time. This is one aspect of plein air painting that I find challenging and fun at the same time. Holland Ridge Farms in Crème Ridge, NJ is where I had the opportunity to paint this piece. During October they host a large sunflower festival and had invited a small group of plein-air painters to be part of the festival. I painted a lot of sunflowers during the weeks there - however on this morning as I stepped out of my car I felt drawn to paint this part of the farm that was not used for raising sunflowers. This oil painting was created on an Ampersand (TM)panel that is signed and ready for framing. If you have any questions please contact me.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
