This painting was inspired by the starling that roost outside my house on the telephone wires. They take a while to settle on the evening, rising and a settling numerous times. This painting expresses that sense of needing to take a bit to settle for the night, showing the passage of time through the knocked back parts of the painting. It is a build up of layers of paint to capture a final moment.

Artist biography Sandra Vick is a painter living just outside Edinburgh at the foot of the Pentland Hills Regional Park. Sandra came to art later in life, completing a foundation diploma at Leith School of art, and going on to study drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art as an undergraduate and then won a scholarship for postgraduate study. In her recent work, Sandra is interested in exploring our place in the landscape, and about how it is part of us and we are part if it. Sandra works in a variety of media to explore her theme, including watercolour, acrylic and oil. Sandra’s paintings have been exhibited across the UK and are in private collections worldwide. Artist Statement 2024 My latest work is about the landscape. It’s about how it is part of us and we are part if it. How the clearance of land in Scotland left many ruins of houses and other memories of humans in the landscape. How, inspired by Jon Muir, we leave “only footprints” that add up to scarred landscapes and the consequent conservation projects. How through our use of mobile phones, every part of the landscape is now documented, shared through social media and images then the more remote and wild places are more known about and further footprints are left. How we are as much part of the landscape as it is part of us. We are nature, we live with nature and we are part of it. And how we are custodians, and need to look after it for future generations to love as much as we have. My paintings capture the colours of the landscape, the shapes of the landscape, the beauty but also how my presence is part of that. Each painting has a hint of a figure, a shadow, a worn path, a presence, a part of it that links it to humans.
