About The Artwork

"The Cockpit Country is in the deep rural heart of the western side of the island of Jamaica. The terrain is rough and wild and the roads to get there, riddled with potholes and steep. Our subject is a city girl, transported to this distant place, by her love for nature and the freedom of being off the grid. She cannot leave behind her "chic" though. So while heels and skirts don't quite work in the bush, she pushes forward, to make a point, all while trying not to snag her stockings. You see, she's quite mad. The subject, this girl, is me." Lattecha Willocks It is composed of acrylics, watercolors and ink on watercolor paper and is matted. The completed artwork is 14"x11" and is presented with a single mat that is 16"x20."

Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica in 1979, Lattecha Willocks’ artistic career began in 2001 when she left home for Vienna, where she lived for a year exploring her wide range of creative interests. This is where she first taught herself the variety of skills needed to succeed as an artist. She has since traveled to nine different countries on this pursuit, and returned home to Jamaica to set up shop in Negril, where her art studio is currently located. As an artist, her work is influenced by her travels, her experience in the hospitality industry, and her Rastafarian roots. She creates in order to share her roots, culture and dreams with the world. Lattecha’s paintings are bright, feminine explorations of life on the island. Rather than focus on the darkness in life as so many artists tend to do, she chooses to paint with the intention of bringing more splendor, hope, and light back into the world. Inspired by all the powerful women in her life—including her mother, grandmother, and sister—she frequently paints the female form with an eye for its diverse beauty and strength. Her work aims to inspire others to see just how much magnificence there is in the quiet moments of every single day, while drawing attention to all the positives we tend to miss when the chaos of life takes over.
