After painting "Bouquet in a Purple Jar" and a few other pieces that didn't do what they were told, I had set up a still life again using my favorite kooky flower pot and a cute cookie jar that my son chose at the store when he was 2. (Cookie Cat is a real figure in the house.) I rather like still life and plan to continue using still life work in my paintings. I wanted to try to get the mixture of matte and gloss textures on the ceramics and the thick glossy leaves of the anthurium. I really had fun doing her black hair with all the reflections and highlights in it. I still had my bouquet from my birthday flowers so I placed a little sunflower for her as well. If you are interested in the language of flowers, the anthurium is a plant that represents hospitality, and the sunflower represents loyalty and adoration. This would make this painting a sweet gift for a good friend, maybe whomever you have tea and cookies with? Like with "Bouquet in a Purple Jar", I still want that Matisse meets Alice Neel vibe. I guessed the depth, it's wired on the back with no frame, floats off the wall using some boards.

I attended the University of Houston school of Fine Arts for a bachelor's in Studio Art - Painting, and graduated from that in 20012. I soon earned my teaching certificate, got my first job as a teacher in Pasadena, TX, then discovered I was expecting son #1. After a long hiatus in which I honed my teaching skills and adapted to motherhood (and popped out a second boy as well), I have been trying to get back in touch with the joy painting once brought me. I am finally happy as I work instead of stressing about keeping up with the imaginary Jones's in my mind.
