About The Artwork

My landscapes are concerned with brief moments out in the hills and fields when senses combine to produce swift, free and instinctive coloured drawings from which the paintings are derived back in the studio. Although they are specific places, I name them for the emotional response to that place. The paintings are multi layered with freely expressed gestural mark making. Paintings are on box boards or canvases and intentionally presented unframed but with a clean white edge and a depth of around 4cm. Signed, dated and titled verso. Paintings are ready to hang.

Andy Waite’s landscapes draw from the tradition of the Romanticists whilst expressing an energy that is distinctly contemporary. These paintings immerse you in, and are a celebration of, the English landscape and all its elemental power. Their abstracted quality and emotive spontaneity mean they do not always reveal themselves immediately, asking you to return and discover something not at first seen, offering an ongoing dialogue that only slowly unfolds. Unspoken conversations playing out that embrace all the senses, and the imponderable nature of the earth beneath us and the sky above. Primarily a landscape painter, Andy Waite also turns to the human figure - imagined portraits reference historical icons with their colouring, use of gold, halos and Christian ancestry. However, they are not based solely on religious figures. Rather they concern themselves with every day emotion, the titles suggesting themselves on completion as their expressions reveal their character. The angels are inspired by graveyard statues and suggest a contemplative quality, traditionally evoking sorrow or loss, but which here bring their blessings back to life.
