About The Artwork

This piece is a study for a larger painting that addresses a common theme in Zen and other Buddhist practices: the number 108. The number 108 has a special significance in that it often is associated with the ringing of bells at specific ceremonial practices. This number is thought to bring forth clarity and enlightenment. This work was inspired by the following haiku: the great temple bells rings one hundred and eight times— may there be peace. — Mitsu Suzuki Suzuki san was an amazing woman, with a clear gift for writing and wisdom. She was also the wife of Shunryu Suzuki who wrote: "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind". The painting is made of powder pigments that are mixed with water and polyurethane to produce a series of transparent paints. The work is on a special canvas only found in the Nagano region of Japan.
