Art Description

Painting: Paint on Cardboard.

This is one of several studies made for the main painting which explores teenagers desire to withdraw in many ways. The psychological state of children and teenagers has become a subject of great interest in recent years, including their disengagement with activities and withdrawal from social/family situations. The painting shows a teenager, engulfed by her own thoughts and concerns, walking away from a beautiful waterfall scene. Whilst the waterfall was based on a set of falls in South Wales, here it is reminiscent of a tropical paradise. The teenager is walking away from a metaphorical paradise too: a loving family life and various fun activities she loved as a younger child. She is preoccupied with her thoughts as are many teenagers.
