About The Artwork

Because nearly six months of the year are humid and, eventually, wet, the circle becomes a visual metaphor for rain drops. Their overlapping and sequencing patterns record extreme humidity on the one hand, and torrential rain on the other.

I work with acrylic paint on canvas. My background is the graphic arts, and I have a strong affinity with minimalism, balance, harmony, positive/negative space. My ideas are taken from philosophy, stories, art history. I paint abstract forms owning their own space, an acknowledgement of the natural world - the sea, the land, the sky. The Suprematist ideas of Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935) resonate especially his thoughts on 'intuitive reasoning', where he along with the Futurist Movement was influenced by the science of cosmic energy. His later works balanced geometric forms in space. I will always be inspired by the Colour Field artists of the 60’s for the way they used space in their paintings to create a new art language: the unlimited expanses, as relevant as the forms both inside and outside those spaces. Abstraction allows me freedom of expression and emotion, and encourages viewers to experience another way of seeing. Whilst developing a painting I often combine an overhead view with traditional perspective to better express atmosphere and environment. My paintings have evolved from structured designs to a fluid style, while still observing an underlying geometry. Consequently my use of acrylic paint has become more spontaneous. Painting in layers, one area at a time, provides density and texture. I use the language of colour to emphasise how we are affected by change and these images often translate into simple abstract landscapes.
