ABOUT THE ARTWORK

I have decided to create "Sunbird Perched on Sycamore Tree" after I saw a clever parrot at a pet shop saying hello to welcome customers. It perched on a dead tree and did not move much because there was an iron chain on its feet linking to that dead tree. I believe if the parrot can fly freely, it would be a lot happier as there is no need worrying about food and water. A wild sunbird can fly and sing perching on trees in forests. It looks like a described phoenix. Historically people believed that phoenix can bring us peace and wealth. Since ancient times sycamores have often been regarded as the symbol of auspicious, gentleman and love. The bird likes to perch on sycamores and people will plant sycamores in order to attract golden phoenix. The painting has yellow, blue, and red colours with the purple sky representing good fortune and happiness.

I was born in China and moved to Hong Kong when I was in my mid twenties. I migrated to the UK in the late 80s and moved to Australia in mid 90s until I went back to Hong Kong in 2015. Since the early 1970s, I have studied Western painting under the tutelage of the renowned Hong Kong painter Mr. Zhou Gongli (1903 – 1989) and the Lingnan calligrapher Mr. Li Wei (1927 – 2016). I am also the second-generation student of Lingnan clerical script master Wu Zifu (1899 – 1979). I have persisted in studying and researching on Chinese painting and calligraphy, as well as Western painting art, in order to better preserve and develop the intangible cultural heritage of Chinese painting and calligraphy. I initially started off portrait oil paintings and did a lot of works when I was young. In recent years, I have developed a new way of painting on Chinese paper blending western art technique with Chinese ink art.
