This triptych was inspired by viewing the sun setting over the bay in Darwin. I was seeking to convey the changes in the sky colours as the sun crept closer to the horizon. The sky went through a transition of warm, hazy blue-greens to intense orange-reds followed by the approaching night with blue-purples as the sun slowly sank below the horizon. In hanging this work, the collector may choose to present the triptych horizontally, canvas 1 on the left to canvas 3 on the right or vertically with canvas 1 at the top to canvas 3 at the bottom. I use spray techniques to achieve smooth gradations of color and tone but prefer to mix my own colors rather than using aerosols to achieve greater control over my color palette.

Dean O’Callaghan is a professional visual artist with over 30 years’ experience. His abstractions have conceptually evolved from his interest in modern and contemporary architecture, and rural landscapes. From the beginning of 2021, his paintings show an intriguing interaction of shape, colour and line that evokes a sense of depth. In 2022, his work has become less hard-edge and by using various spray and layering techniques, he has developed paintings with smooth tonal and colour transitions. “Although my abstractions are inspired by what I see and experience, I invite the viewer to relate my work to their own thoughts and experiences”. Dean is a graduate of Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia where he studied fine arts and education. He has lectured at various academic institutions while maintaining a professional studio space and exhibiting frequently in mixed and solo exhibitions. Dean's work is represented in: Private collections throughout Australia and in the United States. Greening Australia Western Australian Government public art collection.
