About The Artwork

In Alan Wellikoff's boyhood imagination, the cars of the 1950s could be seen as monumental vessels, or enormous, compound-curved creatures capable of traversing vast continents in jig time. Alternatively, his mind envisioned them as mammoth military machines, covered in WW II livery and carrying armies toward imagined battlefields. For the artist, the top of each dashboard represented the bridge of these giants, while their hood ornaments stood ready as escape and excursion vehicles. In an era where such things as hood ornaments have become rare, Alan's collection of antique ones connects to the whimsical realms of his youth, while keeping a place in his artistic imagination. Among these treasures that of the '50s Pontiac, featuring the image of its noble looking and eponymous chief. The juxtaposition of an Indian adorning a mid-century American car reflects the artist's web of interests and influences. Wellikoff's appreciation for the Japanese aesthetic of "Wabi-Sabi" that finds beauty in the worn and aged, adds another layer of complexity to his art. The idea that rusted and weathered elements can possess unique allure resonates in his work, transforming, as in the case of "Super Chief," the image of an abandoned '50s automobile into a collective symbol of both US history and strength in the face of overwhelming odds. But even these, the artwork also tells us, will eventually succumb to the temporal nature of all things. "Super Chief" has been praised by Redditt for its "exceptional color harmony, bold lines, and striking contrast." This acclaim underscores Wellikoff's success in translating his imaginative visions into artworks that resonate with viewers.

A fellow who inadvertantly sprang his girlfriend from solitary in a Maine county jail; ran solo into a burning New York barn only to discover the livestock had found their own way out; raced cars ingloriously at Moroso and Lime Rock; awoke in a remote Burmese pagoda just as dawn struck the face of a road-movie Buddha who'd also been sitting there in the dark; owned the '27 Buick Phaeton in which Sir Lawrence traversed Arabian sands, and stole through the night to stand alone on Little Round Top, in Emerson's garden, aboard the USS Constellation and -- most unforgettably -- in the theater box in which Lincoln was shot. As an fledgling artist, Wellikoff was once awarded for excellence by a juried panel at the Maryland State Fair and twice given silver status by Redditt. His first painting was a portrait of his father-in-law, a WWII Navy pilot, standing before his carrier-borne Avenger bomber. Today, Wellikoff tends to paint whatever draws his fancy for its aesthetic, cultural and historic significance and sense of whimsy or irony. Wellikoff's work has been sold through horse-country galleries in Maryland and Virginia.
