TELL ME WHO YOUR FRIEND IS Painting

The formal portrait has always been a genre which strives to show the grandeur and status of its owner – always showing the owner as rather greater and grander than they are in real life, in an aura of fame and talent. It was exactly this kind of formal portrait which became the conceptual basis for this series of works. However, here it is used as a colouristic model, since today it has lost its societal meaning in present-day life, in which the grandeur and imposing nature of the formal portrait is more suggestive of kitsch than it is of accomplishments in life. These portraits of men are shown together with their dogs – yet the relation between them is destabilised in the picture, causing some degree of iconic confusion for the viewer. The viewer's gaze is compelled to oscillate between the subject and the background, in an attempt to decide which is which. Which is the figure, and which is the background? Who is the subject, and who is the shadow? The subject might be a person who has long been the centre of his own world – or the dog, whose presence in the picture is more keenly felt.
