The Konchi-In Temple Horai Garden is among my favorite gardens. I visited this spectacular Zen Garden last November on my trip to Kyoto. For this, I like to thank Note Gallery friends Mayumi San and Tamiko San, who traveled with me to the Konchi-In Temple and spent a whole day in the Zen gardens and temples. Founded in C1400 by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimochi, The Konchi-In Temple Horai Garden (1632) is a sight to behold. Its panoramic view is visible from the Addot's Quarters (Hojo), which looks even more stunning when the eastern hills contour merge with the rising layers and trimmed bushes beneath. On the front, a sea of raked gravel laps against a Crane Island (right) surmounted by a Red Pine and a Turtle Island (Left), symbolizing happy and long life. Between the two lies an 'altar stone,' conveying the idea of worshiping nature in its purest form, while the central rocks reflect Mt Horai, the Isles of the Blessed, and the unseen presence of Ieyasu.
