ABOUT THE ARTWORK

THE LESSON OF SNATCHING BANANAS OF DR BB ARIS by Frank Willems. Year: 2019 Size: 270 x 170 cm Materials: Acrylic, marker, crayon on reused wood Inspiration: Adriaen Adriaensz, aka Aris Kindt; the scamp who was sentenced to death after been arrested for theft and robbery. He was hanged in Amsterdam and because he was a criminal his soul could no longer be saved. Therefore he had to take place on the cutting table. Dr. BB (baboon) Aris teaches his 7 students how to steal a banana. Without getting caught and without hurting the victim. After all, a baboon cannot buy a banana in the supermarket. If Aris would have lived in this age he would have been arrested, would have get the right kind of help and would have return to society. But he doesn't. And because of his criminal activities he ended up on one of Rembrandt's best-known artworks! Frank’s work is a mix of urban art, pop art and neo-expressionism. He aims to create his art as much as possible on used, discarded materials, but mostly wood. In a playful and humorous way he tries to portray themes such as sex, the current zeitgeist and current events. These can be serious topics, but also absurd improbabilities and topics about events in his own life. He explains: “I am not the best speaker and in a discussion I often keep a low profile. But I observe everything and use this to create my art. I don’t push my opinion. I think it’s more important to make people think about it. Life, freedom and equality are central themes in my work.”
