Tapestry Painting

This current body of work is a series in progress. By re-creating war machines such as the Tankette as a soft sculpture or the military guns in soft, floppy silicone I emasculate them into an almost ridiculous limp unusable form. Visitors are invited to engage with the silicone guns by picking them up and playing with them. When we were children we were often given toy guns, toy soldiers, and cartoons like G.I. Joe to entertain us. It seems strange that as children we were given these ideals of war being heroic, adventurous, and fun. The paintings depict classic war images but in the unassuming color of pink to subvert the heavier content of war and death in the same way as cartoons. There is a purposeful irony in the way we initially see the work and the meaning behind it.
