On the way home one evening, early in spring, we took a detour through Rangiwahia, and the sunset was stupendous. Mts. Taranaki and Ruapehu both loomed on the horizon, although fairly far apart, in consequence of Taranaki having been banished after losing a fight with another great mountain, Ngauruhoe, over his love for Pihonga. Fortunately, they weren't throwing thunderbolts and lava at each other that evening as we drove home, so I took a few lovely photos that I was able to use as the taking-off point for this watercolour painting (36cm x 26cm), imaginatively titled "Taranaki from Rangiwahia".
