Art Description

Painting: Ink, Watercolor, Pastel, Monotype, Chine colle on Paper.

This 3 panel painting is based on a 17th century Portuguese white-work embroidery. 3 allegorical characters riding fantastic beasts (from the 4 depicted in the embroidery) move across the 9 foot space of the image. The piece is named for the central character: temperance seen on the central panel which depicts spring-summer. The paper of each panel is a slightly different type of translucent Asian paper. The left panel (winter) has floral inclusions and some chine colle, the center and right sheets are painted over a paper with random pattern of printed metallic silver squares, but the right panel is the reverse side of the paper with the dull side of the squares.
