This portrait is of an American farmer during the Great Depression. In the United States the Great Depression, throughout the 1930s, and the Dust Bowl, severely impacted the lives of farming families and saw the largest migration in American history. This portrait is a part of a series looking at those affected.

In my artistic practice, I consider myself on a personal journey of expression and see my art as an opportunity to learn about myself and human experience. Drawing inspiration from personal experience, my work delves into the interplay of emotions, thoughts, and the shared struggles that define us all. Through visual study and experimentation, I aim to capture the essence of the human condition, navigating the depths of joy, loneliness, desperation, empathy, and the myriad emotions that colour our existence. At the heart of my creative process lies a profound fascination with the human body—its lines, curves, and shapes. The human body, with its imperfections and vulnerabilities, becomes a visual metaphor for the complexities of the human psyche. The forms made by muscle and fat, the wrinkles criss-crossing the body and the expressions of the face and the posture of the body express the profound intricacies of human emotion and thought. Drawing the human form serves as a foundation to all my work, intertwining the elegance of form with the complexities of emotion. I draw inspiration not only from the visual arts but also from literature and philosophy that resonate with the human experience. Understanding oneself through the works of others can be a powerful tool for introspection and self-discovery. Utilising a range of materials such as acrylic, watercolour, pencil and ink, I employ a style marked by tension, boldness, and contrast. Ultimately, my artistic goals are deeply personal. Through my work, I strive to express and understand myself and the intricacies of human experience. In essence, my art is a visual testament to the shared human experience—an exploration of the myriad emotions, thoughts, and struggles that bind us together, transcending the boundaries of time, age, and individuality.
