The Ballet Lesson Painting

My work is inspired by children - their movement, the expressive way in which they hold themselves. Sketching the gestures of my daughters dancing and playing in paint, I arrived at a point in my technique whereby I felt the need to keep the initial expressive drawing marks as an integral part of the finished image, rather than covering work in subsequent layers of oil paint. Working on the soft neutral grey brown of the clear primed linen, I place the subject within the quiet intimate space of the surface. They are grounded, yet floating. Some viewers have described my work as ephemeral and dreamlike. I think this work captures the vulnerability of my daughter, and that sense of being very much in her own world.
