About The Artwork
The Birth of Pulque depicts the very moment when according to Aztec legend, Pulque was created by the goddess Mayahuel, through a lightning strike of a Maguey plant. Pulque is an alcoholic drink which was savored by the Aztecs long before the existence of Tequila and Mezcal. It was only to be consumed by Priest and aristocrats, consumption of Pulque by the lower classes was strictly prohibited and punishable by death if a commoner were found intoxicated in public. Pulque comes from the juice of the Maguey plant, it is extracted and later fermented into a whitish opaque often sweet and slimy alcoholic beverage. No distillation process is needed.
