Cycling around Dublin City on what was a rare and beautiful summers day. My friend Ben and I strolled around the city on our bikes taking photographs and enjoying the Sun. This particular scene struck me; the buildings that rise on the horizon of Grand Canal Dock at once looked like bright blocks of colour in the Summer light. I felt a conviction that I wanted to portray Dublin in this light. Disposing of the superfluous detail in the buildings, I wanted to create them as shapes. To pull out their character and fit them in with that of the surrounding city, both human and artificial. Like friendly monoliths or great anthropomorphized cinder blocks leaning over the local watering hole.

This continuing series is derived from that moment on that beautiful day. I want to create an image of Dublin as serene, noble, cheerful and wry. To paint Dublin in the bright light that might not always be shining on our town from the sky but is always ready to burst out into spontaneous laughter, song or dance at a moments notice. This is the Dublin I know, love and want to shine a light on in what is sometimes a drab and sour mood in the city. A mood that comes from a long history of how the locals here relate to their lot in life. In a what is; a City and a nation still finding out how to speak clearly about its' problems and proudly about its' merits.
