Usman Semiu Alvin is a talented contemporary artist born in Ugbenor, Edo State, and raised in Effurun, Delta State, Nigeria. He is a distinguished graduate of the renowned Federal Polytechnic, Auchi. Recognized as the Nigerian School of Colours, his alma mater shaped his expertise in painting. For over a decade, Semiu has been crafting emotive and realistic paintings, driven by his profound passion for human anatomy and a relentless pursuit of experimentation with diverse styles and techniques. His artistic journey evolved as he explored deeper into figurative art, gradually transitioning to a focus on stylization, which has become the hallmark of his distinct painting style. Through skillful manipulation, Semiu captures a unique essence by distorting human physiques and facial features in his figurative works, resulting in a captivating series that showcase his artistic versatility and creativity. In recent years, Semiu has embarked on a new artistic exploration, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic in mid-2020. Drawing inspiration from Black African figuration and its rich historical symbolism, he initiated a series titled DARK SKINNED, which serves as a powerful medium for expressing his perspectives and beliefs. This series, marked by its deep symbolism and thematic depth, challenges negative stereotypes and biases associated with dark-skinned individuals. Through his art, Semiu aims to celebrate the raw, unapologetic beauty of dark-skinned African men and women, conveying a message of empowerment, resilience, and self-worth. His works has been featured in art exhibitions and festivals locally and internationally. He is a full-time studio Artist working and resides in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.
