This landscape wasn't planned as such; it came about. The Oakland hills fire had caused me to evacuate with my animals. I took with me slides of my work, family pictures, and dog and cat food. Landscapes gave me rich shapes and the sensation of deep space. I altered color, replanted trees and shifted the ground underneath them, to create a calm and reflective whole. "Window" paintings emphasized the picture plane. Shapes play back and forth with this plane, forming tensions between them. A quiet mood dominates. Vibrations and dissonances keep it alive. COLOR has become my passion. I needed it to interact in organic forms and not take the easy path of squares and rectangles with hard edges. Activity on the canvas is not predetermined. It is discovered, much like a jazz musician whose sounds and rhythms make us want to move in harmony with them - and dance. When layer upon layer, soft and hard edges, bright and toned color, light and dark shapes, big and small areas come together in that harmony, They can touch those points of recognition inside us all.
