ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Revealed behind a curtain, a cat plays chess with the rats using delicious cubes of cheese. The "rat race" is best encapsulated by Happiness, by Steve Cutts - a five-minute film that features a society of rats seeking the elusive currency of Happiness. In the last scene, a rat chases a dollar bill, only to find it landing on a trap – an office desk among a million other office desks. But it is not only about the hopeless rats, but also about the Game - often appearing fair, when in fact, it is not. It typifies the often imbalance playing field between the powerful and the powerless.

Van is a Vietnamese-born multi-disciplinary artist with an MA from the Royal College of Art. Her work is characterised by absurdist and humourous comments on the structured and rational fabric of systems, institutions and societal norms. This is partly due to her previous experience in the corporate world. She holds equal distrust for them and the world of art institutions.
