About The Artwork

This colorful, contemporary 12" x 9" still life oil painting captures the beauty of line, color and form in an expressive, inspiring manner. The simple transparent green wine bottle and dark blue ceramic creamer are nestled with a pear and dramatic purple plums. These objects start to become something more in the context of the warm colors and inviting palette. The artwork exudes a sense of passion combining creativity, design and influences from the expressionist and fauvist movements in art. Varied brushwork and imaginative colors help to invoke emotion and a deeper connection to the painting giving it a modern influence while retaining a spirit of tradition. Inspiration for this painting came from my love for painting still life's and working with items I have collected over the years. As symbols of place and time they also become something new in the context of a painting. I love incorporating fruit because their availability changes throughout the year and they always remind me of the organic nature of color and it's power to elicit memory, sensation and desire. I painted this on a gallery wrapped canvas in oils. It is a signed original.

ARTISTS STATEMENT: I observe, and participate in, the change of hues. I stand alone in a perspective—influenced by the roads and detours that I’ve chosen. The subjects I interpret on canvas dance with tradition, but underneath exists an individual search for freedom. As a creator, I’ve always been interested in working with color. I see my life as having a palette of its own and I seek to have the chroma of my experiences come through in my paintings. Over time, I’ve realized the only way to achieve this goal is to risk exposure—to unveil my simplified forms to the viewer. Whether the forms operate within the context of landscape or still life, the resulting narrative is always a story of merit, regardless of public perception or understanding. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: I was born in Vancouver, BC in 1958 and then moved to California which is where my parents originally met. I lived there until I was 6 when my family moved across the US to New Jersey for my father's work. I grew up in a creative family and pursued art in college only to leave it upon graduation, dabbling with it over the years that followed. In 2010 I returned to painting on a more committed basis. This was spawned by some significant life changes and painting became my respite. I still reside in New Jersey and as an artist I appreciate the proximity to both Philadelphia and New York City. I've been showing my work since 2011 and continue to do so.
