ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting profoundly explores the complexities of the human experience. Through vibrant abstract forms and symbolic imagery, it delves into the tensions defining our existence. The composition features interwoven figures—angelic, demonic, and others defying categorization—symbolizing the struggle between opposing forces such as good and evil, spirituality and materialism. Their interaction within the painting’s confined space suggests these forces exist within each individual, shaping our thoughts, actions, and destinies. The artist’s deliberate use of bold, expressive colors—reds, greens, yellows, blues, and oranges—creates a harmonious yet intense emotional landscape. Black outlines, reminiscent of stained glass, add structure and emphasize the sacred and profane themes. The overlapping, ambiguous figures symbolize life’s interconnectedness, with their colors bleeding into one another, reflecting how our experiences and identities are intertwined. The painting invites viewers on a subconscious journey, where familiar symbols like halos and pitchforks are reimagined in surreal, abstract ways. This dream-like quality reflects the artist’s interest in the hidden forces shaping our thoughts, desires, and fears. Balancing playfulness with seriousness, the work engages the viewer emotionally and intellectually, grappling with deep existential questions while finding meaning in life’s absurdities. This piece also comments on modern society, reflecting the complexity of contemporary life where traditional boundaries are constantly challenged. The fragmented composition mirrors the fluid, ever-changing nature of identity in a world of shifting certainties. Priced for its originality and depth, this painting is more than decoration—it’s a profound statement on the human condition. Its value lies in its ability to provoke deep reflection and dialogue, making it a significant addition to any discerning collection, justifying a high price point.

Born in Regina, Canada in 1989, Byrun Boutin-Maloney discovered his passion for art through his mother, an amateur artist who nurtured his creativity from a young age. Excelling in art throughout elementary and high school, his journey took a significant turn during his sophomore year when he assisted renowned artist Joe Fafard in assembling an installation metal sculpture at École Monseigneur de Laval in 2005. At the University of Regina, Byrun delved deeper into his artistic pursuits, attending classes in art history and two-dimensional art. His artistic evolution culminated in 2023 with his first solo exhibition titled “Notre-Dame” at the Artesian in Regina, Canada. Byrun Boutin-Maloney is best known for his abstract visual art, characterized by bold colors and a dream-like quality. Working primarily with oil pastels, his technique involves outlining the subjects of his paintings with a distinctive black line reminiscent of stained-glass windows in cathedrals. His work often incorporates symbolism, infusing his art with mystery, energy, and juxtaposition. Throughout his career, Byrun has sold over 30 paintings, each a testament to his unique vision and artistic depth. In a deliberate choice that underscores his thematic concerns, he occasionally creates art on cardboard. This unconventional medium serves a dual purpose: symbolizing art’s transformative and ephemeral nature and drawing attention to social issues such as homelessness. In Canada, cardboard is often used by those in need as makeshift signs for financial aid, a stark reminder of poverty’s persistent grip on artists throughout history. By choosing cardboard, often seen as mundane or disposable, Byrun elevates ordinary materials into cherished pieces through the spiritual essence of creativity and expression. Byrun Boutin-Maloney continues to explore new artistic avenues from his studio in Estevan, SK, Canada where he remains committed to pushing artistic boundaries and exploring the intersections of art, symbolism, and social commentary.
