Art Description

Painting: Oil on Wood.

Resting somewhere in-between representation and abstraction, my paintings aim to evoke a sense of space rather than to render an accurate copy of one. Every painting begins as a cluster of spontaneously composed snippets of reality, often fragments of places visited in the past. This intuitive process of combining random data on canvas helps begin the conversation with the painting and creates wealth of marks to select from in later stages of the painting process. I aim for the work to stand independent of its realistic source yet preserve enough of the original imagery to show the history of its making, the stages the painting went through. The laborious process of adding paint, scraping and carving results in a sensuous surface, rich in texture, pattern and layers and becomes a metaphor of how a place can be filled with emotions, memories and history. The work comes in a white, wooden, floating frame.
