The Old Shed Painting

I like to explore in the early morning. In the hours just before and after dawn, everything takes on a magical, luminous quality. This abandoned shed in the early light seemed to tell me something about new beginnings. It may have seen better days but this wasn’t going to be its last. Gouache on colored paper can produce a radiant image, even if the subject is shrouded in shadow. My paintings are intended to work on several levels. Objectively, I want them to have a kind of beauty that isn't necessarily "pretty," but will add to setting into which it is set. Further, I try to evoke some sense of emotion, whether it is hope, longing, or something in between. The same painting can illicit a different response from different people. That's how it should be. Lastly, most of my work endeavors to convey some spiritual element as well. This is rarely allegorical, but rather the painting itself is imbued with a spiritual quality during its execution. I paint with sacred music playing, and I employ special meditation techniques to the process. Original painting is shipped flat and unframed so it can be housed in its new home to the tastes of the collector.
