I was thinking of "Spinoza" after finishing this imaginary portrait. I began with the face of an Italian nobleman but the painting morphed into Dutch clothing in the era of Rubens and Rembrandt. As the painting progressed, I added the red collar to indicate nobility. The portrait is meant to be the face of a "serious" man who contemplates the universe, namely a philosopher who, nevertheless, is a man of th world, familiar with business and matters of governance but yet detached, looking inward, and seeking truth.
