About The Artwork

The Room No:135

Acrylic, graphite on unprimed canvas

180x135cm - 2 pieces

Streched / Wooden Frame

The Room Series; Notes:

“... I love my work where material and texture stand out. On the cotton canvas, where I make a special effort to show its raw form, colors come together with acrylic in a creamy consistency as layers come on-top of each other, sometimes with natural sand and sometimes with sand paste with acrylic/sand mixture of liquid watercolor. Figures come to life with a graphite touch, shadows are formed, the atmosphere gains depth and the story comes to an end…”

“... Figures, rarely communicating with each other, and of which I do not comment on how they feel, encapsulate the room. Bright acrylic colors are balanced with pastel tones. All these textures and colors creating contrast is the most characteristic aspect of the Room series…”

The Room; A story with a beginning and an end. The subject is human, and space is determined by four walls. Frame defines the border; and life is stagnant in this limited, timeless space. Nothing ever surprises…

Erna Ucar was born in Ankara in 1979 and graduated from the Graphic Design School, Fine Arts Faculty of Hacettepe University in 2001. She lived in Moscow between 2004-2014 and while there became deeply fascinated with Russian Fine Arts.Spending years living in Cyprus, Turkey, Russia, Malaysia and Luxembourg, experiencing life and light in different geographies and cultures has had a great impact on her life and her art. After living in Moscow for several years, Turkish artist Ernna Ucar became fascinated by Russian fine art, specifically Neoclassicism and Romanticism. These influences are evident in her large-scale paintings that utilize dreamy color palettes and delicate, feminine silhouettes. Erna’s background in graphic design is apparent in all her compositions- whether it be a figure study, an abstract painting, or an idealized landscape - each is carried out with a scrupulous to detail. “In The Room series, I don’t worry about proportions or perspective but focus instead on the individuality and solitude of these figures in a crowded space. The raw materials and different textures used in the paintings are as important as the expressions represented."
