About The Artwork

During a time of transition in my life, in 2014 I was in flight from the Yukon to the Vancouver area when I took the photo from the airplane that inspired this painting. I did not even realize at the time that this beautiful sunset was captured over the Sunshine Coast where I would decide to move a few months later. "the Salish Sea" is the new name for the body of water between the coast and Vancouver Island formerly known as the "Strait of Georgia". The new name honours the people who have lived in this region since time immemorial.

My painting process is intuitive, building up many finely textured layers of acrylic paint to create luminous colour and flowing organic patterns of energy. Through exploring the natural world in my artwork, I seek to transcend cultural barriers and express what I value most: protecting the land, water and air for future generations. ............................................................................ I am an Canadian painter descended from the indigenous Red River Métis people, and my grandparents on the other side of the family were immigrants. I was born in Toronto in 1969, and grew up mainly on the Pacific Northwest Coast, in British Columbia. .......................................................................... As a young woman in Vancouver BC, I studied art and psychology, and sought for my sense of purpose in the city. In in the year 2000 I headed 2,000 miles north to a remote subarctic town in the Yukon Territory. In the north my artistic vision evolved in harmony with the powerful, sometimes harsh forces of the turning of the seasons, and the gentle beauty of the land. ..................................................................... After fourteen years in the Yukon, today I live once again in British Columbia, in a small town near the ocean, surrounded by the familiar coastal forest.
