ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This work was created in 2020 when we were right in the middle of Covid and adapting to a new way of living. It was summer time, and we had a good amount of rain to give us some respite from the hot, humid summers usually experienced in Pakistan. It was a time when I felt most connected to nature and realised how much there is to learn from it. The hues in leaves and they way they change as light changes around them, the shades of green that surrounded me, were all inspiration for this artwork. I used my signature hand-cut paper pattern to create layers and depth, and created a piece in full colour, which was new for that time. Works before this included a lot of white as the dominant colour, representing the unknown, while colour was confined and protected by the hand-cut paper pattern around it. This piece is framed and will be shipped in a crate.

Inspired by the Rorschach inkblot test, and by my own experiences, I paint my journey through life. Even in its abstraction, my work is a perceptible visual diary of events and occasions - each work remembering something important or personal. Titles support the story behind the piece, giving direction to the viewer, developing my artistic language and what I want to say about my life and experiences through art. My painting technique reflects impulse, spontaneity, and passion. Working instinctively and without a plan in mind makes it cathartic. Through paint daubs, patterns and layers, I communicate what I find hard to put into words. As life changes and new challenges emerge, as paint and mediums mix, the work suggests fluidity and openness. But maintains complexity and intrigue through patterns and pairing of bright colours. The work gains depth and vibrancy through cutouts and layers of painted paper. Creating compelling visuals, revealing details; echoing my life, as it unfolds.
