About The Artwork

This is a double self portrait on an oak icon triptych panel. The panel is hinged and opens outward to expose a portrait on the inside. When closed the panel is 30x40. Open 60x40. The outer painting is a nude seen through a shower door (protecting and masking the identity) when the doors are opened you see her, exposed, vulnerable yet courageous. The piece was created for the AVROTROS art competition "Het Naakt" (The Nude) and as one of the 20 finalists of 3500 entries, hangs in the museum De Fundatie until June 19th. After the exhibition ends, the painting is available for sale. I very specifically chose to work on a panel that opened and closed. As part of the conceptual process I was exploring the idea of censorship and nudity in our modern society. The contrast of the abstracted and blurred nude on the outside with the more traditional interior portrait is deliberate. Personally I think it takes great strength and courage to be vulnerable. This is something that any artist with self awareness is very conscious of. I hope when you meet the gaze of the artist you sense that strength and courage. But such an unwavering gaze can be confronting. Thus the viewer can choose when and if to open the painting.

I paint because it brings me joy and peace. It helps me to remember that life is better when you look at the world through the eyes of an artist; that beauty can be found in the midst of pain and struggle. I believe that optimism in the face of adversity can be a deliberate choice. Despite painting in a realistic style, I hope that my personal choice to search for the positive comes through and brightens the day of the people who view my work.
