The story in the Gospels of the poor widow, who gives her last few coins to the Temple, while others give perhaps more, but only a fraction of their wealth, is a very modern theme. One might even expect her to die after this, as she has nothing to live on anymore, but this does not stop her from wanting to strengthen her connection with the spiritual world. The imagery is unexpected, with the large green face and Jesus in black - this is how it came out. In this art-work paints have been used which are made with pigments from plants - as in most of my work. Such pigments have a special character and the ones I use are all light-fast. Such and other materials comply with the method of working I have developed, which is based on letting the forms arise from colour applied to the paper while contemplating on the subject matter. This takes time. While plant-based pigments give such a special image (not easily conveyed by digital screens), I suggest to put neither glass nor anything else in front of the art-work. I am a Dutch painter based in Switzerland; during more than three decades of creating art, having started with oil on canvas, I have learned to appreciate plant-based pigments and their application to high-quality paper, in which I specialise at the moment. This technique is an appropriate tool for art which aims to have, in one way or the other, spiritual content. Spirit is real in art, and in the art-works you see here, it has a strong connection to the object. This is established through a special way of working, aiming at connecting the spiritual with the art-object being created. This is possible through thorough knowledge and craftsmanship of materials combined with conscious development of character of soul. Because of their specific content and mood, the art you see here, works particularly well in a space in which a contemplative, peaceful atmosphere is envisaged; for example a medical practice, a meditation room, a religious space or similar. The plant-based water-colour paints are especially fit for this method. But also for the oil paintings the method of painting is largely the same. These works of art are one of a kind, there seems to be not much like it - and so they fit well into that stream of art from the low-countries (Netherlands) formed by artists who tend to be unique individuals: like Pieter Brueghel, Hieronymous Bosch, Rembrandt van Rijn, James Ensor, Piet Mondriaan, Vincent van Gogh, Willem de Kooning - to name only a few.
