Watching the sun appear from behind the clouds of a summer storm and seeing the light slowly and softly change the muted and dreary colors into warm greens and bright yellows in contrast with deep purple shadows brought a feeling of peace and quiet to me. I had spent the previous month painting a vibrant canvas that changed on a day to day basis as my mind was shifting through emotions and thoughts just as strong and vibrant....it was exhausting being fully immersed in surreal colors and I underestimated how much color controls my moods, dreams, thoughts....I was oversaturated and emotionally spent I thought I needed a long break from painting but then I saw this scene and it healed and inspired me to create again. It was so simple yet so powerful in it's suttle value changes with tiny highlits and deep shadows....it brought me back into a safe space in my mind and once again I started seeing inspiration everywhere, everything has beauty and this painting was the catalyst that would begin a string of some of my favorite work ....in this painting I found peace and quiet and from there good things would grow within me and I hope this painting will inspire peace within you so well ...thank you for looking.

Matthew McDermott, b. 1981 NY, is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mat struggles with mental illness and epilepsy on a day to day basis but has found his purpose in the creative arts in the form of painting, stained glass and custom woodworking. Prior to 2018 his work was available only through a commission basis and resides in private collections throughout the United States. In 2015 he was fortunate enough to gain a patron that funded the body of his work now available in his portfolio. "My artwork has become my only way to find myself again. Life is good when I'm painting and creating and I'm happy because I'm doing what I love. When things are bad I focus on the fact that my art is there waiting for me to get better and that it is something to hang on to when everything seems so horrible and normal life feels like a dream or a story that can't possibly be real."
