ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This Shimmering Space is a new collection of abstract works. Inspired by Brighton’s seafront, it explores the many contradictions inherent within our experience of the place. Executed with a palette of blacks and muted greys, the paintings intend to locate the perfect balance between emotional vastness, escape and restraint. Heavy, urban forms are juxtaposed with drizzling skies and hazy seas, which contrast with the queasy pinks of candy floss and Brighton Rock plus the mint green of the municipal paintwork. This Shimmering Space is a tribute to Brighton, its light, its dark, and all its variant shades of life between. Influenced by Diebenkorn's cityscapes, Monet's hazy light and the monumentalism of Kline, This Shimmering Space is a series of modern seascapes inspired by a city clinging onto the edge of the world. I like to say that I paint ‘The Edge of The Rainbow’. The term comes from Donna Tartt’s novel, The Goldfinch as she describes a space that sits just beyond reality, where all beauty, magic and art exists. My paintings are an attempt to conjure this space, to break through this reality and try and grasp what lies just beyond what we can see. Its a place that is blurry, shimmering and impossible to capture. In practice, I use layers and layers of thin, runny oil paint to create glowing glazes of colour that vibrate and change in the light. As I apply each translucent layer I like to imagine that light and air is caught within the painting, allowing it to breathe and come alive.
