ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece is part of the 2021 Fragile Collection: ‘If this were an art exhibit set to music, ‘Fragile’ by Sting, my personal favourite, would be playing in the background. The song is brief and powerful, much like this new body of work. Sting offers a repetitive reminder of human fragility in his deceptively simple lyrics. Moved by a senseless political murder in Nicaragua, he wrote the song as an ode to non-violence. In the same way, this limited collection explores and documents the stark fragility of humankind. I created it with a slow, mindful determination. Each piece in this collection is reflective, poignant and perfectly composed. And lest we forget, each piece is a powerful reminder of how fragile we are. ‘ — Aadila Munshi

Aadila Munshi is a contemporary artist living in Toronto, Canada. She is known for her painted abstractions of distressed urban environments. Fascinating urban textures and grunge are uniquely contrasted with soft, elegant marks and letters. Composed intuitively, her abstract expressions emerge as visual representations of her perception of the push and pull between struggle, hope, and the ability to rise above. A former Criminologist, Aadila grew up in South Africa during the apartheid regime. She studied painting in the studio of a local artist in her town. In 2000, she moved to Toronto permanently, where she studied further at the Toronto School of Art and established her painting practice. Relocating third world sensibilities to the first world strongly informs her work.
