About The Artwork

"Thundercloud Botany", is part of my "Oceans" series. The series refer to the rain and lighting storms there are here in Botany Bay, NSW-Australia. Specifically they refer to one stormy afternoon I experienced from my studio’s window, which inspired the series. I was looking for a subject matter for days and there it was. I could see the sky brewing over Botany Bay; when out of a sudden dark and thick clouds, wind, rain, hail and lighting took over the sky. I like rain, it places me in a state of calm and healing mind-set, yet the power of rain and storms may also be destructive. This series evoke displacement, remembrance of the rain forest close to where I was born in Costa Rica, it also evokes travels at sea, voyages I made on the seven seas, but also remind me of Botany Bay’s history, of the first nations who lived in this area on the arrival of Captain Cook in 1770. There are 4 dramatic clouds on this art work, almost menacing over the land, thus "Thundercloud Botany" (Oil and oil stick on stretched canvas, D rings in place, edges show painting process, un-framed, ready to hang) (Photo taken by Monica Renaud)

Costa Rican - Australian, Sydney-based artist Randal ARVILLA, works in encaustics, oil and acrylic painting. His works examine fragility of nature, his search for his cultural identity and inner healing. Arvilla’s imagery carries a sense of displacement or re-placement as a global traveller and resident in a new land. Through addition, subtraction, intuitive mark-making, lines, textures, typography, colour intensity and movement, Arvilla creates an energetic oeuvre with abstract and expressive influences. Arvilla borrows images and stimuli from moments that catch his eye, industrial grid patterns, landscape, historical accounts, typography, letter & number punch sets, creating narratives, yet not literal ones. His colour intensity, use of materials, gesture and intuitive style present in these works depict influences of Costa Rican, Australian and Western Art. Randal Arvilla’s works suggest impressions, emotions, places, familiar situations, memories, trips that he has made worldwide and are a continuous research where one series leads to another.
