Protea cynaroides also know as the King Protea or Mountain-rose Sugarbush is one of the biggest known proteas. It is prized worldwide as a magnificent cut flower and in South Africa honoured as our national flower.
I discovered this protea while wondering through our beautiful, world-acclaimed Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. King proteas come in a variety of reds, pinks and creams.
I begin my painting by choosing a colour to exaggerate a specific element. In this case I wanted to accentuate the build-up of the stems to the mauve/lilac point. I then set about layering washes of oils developing depth and interest. Once these layers are dry I begin working on my composition and the process of building up the flower. I use a variety of painting (or palette) knives for the final stages of the piece to add to the lights and depth of the flower. This highlights some wonderful textural elements which is fitting for such a dynamic bold protea.
