I’m interested in the human condition, particularly in the idea of human life as a struggle between the demands of the inner world and those of the environment. In my most recent work, quasi-faceless characters inhabit canvasses that appear almost too small to contain them. Rather than a mere limit, the border becomes an active force that exerts violence upon the subject-matter. For this latest body of work, I adopted the format of fairly traditional paintings: colored canvases mounted onto stretchers. But I think of them more as drawings that incorporate color as an additional communication tool. My paintings start out as drawings on paper, which are later transferred to the canvas. In these sketches, which usually take a while to finish, I come up with the elements I want to include, I organize them, and finally I polish them to a fine degree. Next, I prepare the canvas with gesso, acrylic and anything that will give me an interesting texture. The last last step is the drawing/painting of the characters. I feel brushes are somewhat imprecise, and had to devise a brush-free technique. I combine oil pastels with an acrylic polymer that makes them touch dry.
