ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Communism was dull, Nazism was brown. Economic Totalitarianism is pink. In many circles, political issues are taboo. They repel, arouse contempt or indifference. To tackle them, Alexandre Chartrand offers pop-expressionist paintings with glaring colours and tantalizing topics. Seduction and desire are presented under such repulsive titles as Dow Jones, Capital Leak or Hypnosis of the Shareholders. He draws our attention to deliver a thought. Economic Totalitarianism We track individuals by the way they spend. A credit record is tied to us like a shadow. Education bounds us to depts. Right to profit surpasses human dignity. States are forced to bail financial institutions out of the trouble they've caused, but in return these institutions won't lift a finger to help out a State. We can't exist without a bank account. It's not brutal or monolithic. It's sly and sexy. It arouses our desire and excludes those who do not comply and it puts us to work.
