Ema is a Croatian girl i worked with in London, after meeting her i knew i had to paint her. Her amazing beauty and wonderful energy was encapsulating so i asked her if i could paint her, she agreed and i took some photos of her at my studio. When painting this work i really wanted to do something different for the background and create a stark difference from the subject. I did this by first dripping watered down oil paint to create a almost vial like look, then masking each oil run individually with masking fluid and painting the blue background transition in which i pretty much used every oil color blue to make it vibrant. Then i painted the almost nebular effect in between and finally painting the face, hair and ending with her blouse. The blouse was done with spray paint, acrylic and markers, i wanted this to be the funkiest part because in the reference photo it was the most boring part so i wanted to jazz it up a bit. I think in today's society we all have to look within ourselves a bit more and figure who we are and what role we play in this crazy world. The feeling i wanted to invoke with this painting is that she almost looks lost but also self assured at the same time and that everything will be OK even with all the craziness in the background. I hope you enjoy.
