About The Artwork

Transformation II 2019 12" x 12" oil on canvas A new series inspired by this quote If you begin to understand what you are without trying to change it, then what you are undergoes a transformation. —Jiddu Krishnamurti Is an inability to understand myself or life, why it took 18 years to paint this painting? Or was it fear, priorities, lack of priorities that caused such an extended time frame? Regardless of the answer to that question, I finished the large 71” x 51” oil painting and concluded the painting is a conceptual portrait of a human or humanity as a whole, our shifts in consciousness, self-awareness and our oneness. Generally, I start a new series with smaller paintings as my sketches to reference as the work becomes larger. In the case of this Transformation, I am working in reverse, by using it as an inspiration and guide for some wood assembly prototypes. The two wood pieces are repurposed wood slats I used when I framed my canvases in the past. Sometimes I have extra paint when I clean up at the end of the day so instead of throwing it away, I would grab a wood slat and paint it. I had several of these laying around and when I moved studios, I taped them together for easy transport. After doing so, I liked how they looked sandwiched together and thought that would make an interesting piece of art. I am combining this studio practice with the concept from the Transformation painting having each color or stripe represent self and humanity in different times and spaces. Thus far I have created the 3 pieces exhibited here so let’s see where the series goes…… Enjoy! for more day to day art making see my Instagram page @courtneycottonetal
