Tree study, Rowallane Garden Painting

A study of a tree. Painted on location at Nendrum. When painting with acrylics I use a lot of medium so that is can slide the paint around to create textures and glazes. I often prepare paper sprayed and glazed with a variety of analogous colours in order to imitate the richness and variety of colour and tones in nature. There is a lot of snobbery regarding the use of acrylics in painting. Some of it is justified as the colours can be a crude and plastic compared to oils. As acrylic dries quickly, unlike oils, you don't get the 'mud' on the palette which is useful for creating subtle tones. Glazing is one way of overcoming this.
