“THE CREATIVE AMBITIONS OF ROB LAGROUW, A TRUE 'UOMO UNIVERSALIS!'' || Rob Lagrouw’s journey as (furniture) designer began in the early 1980’s. The geographical center of his creativity back then was Rotterdam (NL) and it was on these grounds that Rob decided to kick-start his own design store in 1986: DAD Dutch Art & Design. With his muse and soulmate Jollie by his side, Rob focused on selling artsy furniture that was first and foremost designed by him. At that time and place Rob had no idea that his creative ambitions would soon turn in to gold… Within only five years Rob and Jollie managed to greatly expand their business to another level: Rob’s furniture designs were a huge success and so they were ‘forced’ to reopen their store at a new and much bigger location, also in Rotterdam. Rob seized the opportunity to turn the store, with its bare concrete floors, crumbling walls and rusty pipes, into a piece of art itself. As a result people were quite literally able to take a walk into the creative mind of Rob Lagrouw. “PICASSO WHO…?” || As time passed, furniture designs from prestigious global brands like Cappellini, Ingo Maurer and Philippe Starck were added to the collection of DAD Dutch Art & Design, turning the store into an international stage for interior art. The personal works of the ‘crazy Dutchman’ still attracted the most visitors though. At that time Rob also developed a strong passion for painting: he started creating impressive and big paintings that carried pure human emotions: from a bullfighter taking his final stand to a saxophonist playing the blue note. Rob’s paintings were an immediate success and he gained more recognition as a painter, with more and more people becoming interested in his paintings on a daily basis.
