About The Artwork

The artist visited the tulip growing regions of Holland during 2019. A growing desire for form & simplicity, has enabled this body of painted works to explore a botanical & architectural model; where the colour embodies the structure. Laser-cut birch plywood & sleek, circular fields of saturated, clean, hard-edged & botanically inspired colour appear to float on the surfaces of the wall, casting shadows. The resulting works are a hybrid of sculpture & painting - a delicate visual language of colour & form.

James Burke (b.1983) is a London based visual artist. 6 years of fine art training, culminated in a Masters degree at UAL Central Saint Martins in 2007. James Burke’s practice challenges current notions of colour & process, pattern & geometry, materiality & form; whilst drawing on principles from Formalism, Hard Edge & Minimilism, to the Bauhaus, Design Art & Relational Aesthetics. The circular geometry used by the artist seeps into cultures, with subtle differences & a broad range of applications. The geometry has been seen & experienced inside churches, cathedrals, mosques, synagogues, roman villas, ancient ruins, shopping malls, haute couture, books & museums. The artist extracts this geometric form & applies it through a postmodern working methodology. Artist notes: - ‘The act of using circular forms, creates a bridge between geometry as the machinery of reality, and the ergonomics of organic matter.’ J Burke, Financial Times Magazine, 2007. - Design principles & psychological narratives are explored through the lenses of both nature & the machine. - The circular form is beautiful. It never ends. - Belief is built around what is not visible, the empty fragments between what is visible.
