About The Artwork

Twilight Cockatoos by Kate Graham. A forest scene in thick textured paint in coloured bands including purple, blue and green, and highlights of striking orange and yellow. Colours depict the glow of twilight. Add the flock of cheeky cockatoos that occupy the canvas with naive frivolity, this piece becomes a whimsical celebration of nature. Style is loose and painterly, giving it a textured charm that matches the naivety of the subject matter. Inspired by the colour field paintings of last century, the colour scheme becomes not only the background to the trees, but an important feature of the painting. This painting would make a great addition to any home, office, nursery, living room or bedroom, a real conversation piece. Painted on quality canvas, hooks and wire on back so ready to hang. Sides also painted in a continuance of the composition, so no need to frame.

Having grown up in a household with a fulltime artist, Kate inherited an incredible legacy of art from her father, renowned Australian illustrator and artist Stephen Graham. She has always had an interest in art and especially paintings, being drawn to the world that are created in the area of the canvas. At university Kate majored in photography, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2003. In the years since, she built up a career as a graphic designer and illustrator in a number of advertising agencies across Sydney and Brisbane. After moving to Brisbane in 2010 she soon began pursing her love of painting in conjunction with her father's art studio, culminating in a joint exhibition with him in 2014. In late 2017 Kate decided to end her corporate career, having reached the level of a senior graphic designer, in order to work fulltime in her creative studio, Anvil Artworks. Here she explores her passion for painting, while also working as a freelance designer and illustrator. Kate has exhibited in a number of galleries on the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, and her works can be found in a number of countries across Asia, Europe, and the US. Kate’s work is a celebration of colour. Her naive landscapes invite the viewer to enter the realm of the imagination by exploring the hues and shapes of the compositions. Landscapes offer the perfect outlet for presenting colour in riotous combinations in some instances, and in others a more muted but still impactful approach. Also of interest to Kate is adding some whimsy to her work, this can be seen in her naive portraits of Frankie the Fox, and the gathering of galahs and birch trees.
