ARTIST’S STATEMENT I didn’t have my own artist statement for a long time. I treated painting as a steppingstone from my work as an architect. Simply, as a pleasant way to spend free time. It quickly became apparent for me that I could not imagine life without creating art works and I wish to make my mark in the world of contemporary art. As a graduate from the Cracow University of Technology and active designer,I describe myself as “an architect by profession, artist by accident.” I reckon that this creative background has harmonised perfectly with my development as an abstract artist, as I know how to work with space, light and composition. I start every painting with chalking out the grid, exactly as I was taught to do while preparing for the drawing exam for the architecture studies. At this stage of my artistic career I am very keen to keep exploring my capabilities without adhering too rigidly to a distinctive personal “style”. My current direction in art is based on sensibility and it often boils down to the decision whether I like the artwork or not and does it stir positive emotions or disappointment. Right now I really enjoy experimenting continuously with different styles, media and colour palettes. The aesthetic aspect of art is important for me. I gustily concur with the famous statement by Pierre-Auguste Renoir: “To my mind, a picture should be something pleasant, cheerful, and pretty, yes pretty! There are too many unpleasant things in life as it is without creating still more of them.” I am aware that this is a bold view to take in present-day society, where conceptual art reigns supreme and traditionally aesthetically-pleasing work can often be dismissed as unworthy. However, with my art, I seek to bring joy and soul to a space, as well as pleasure to the owners of my paintings. I belive that such a concept is not to be disregarded. It doesn’t mean that my paintings lack any deeper meaning. All of them were inspired by concrete thoughts, emotions or events that matter for me, but I simply want the meaning to be treated more universally if it comes to the spectators. I allow the viewer, through their own personal interaction with the colours, textures and forms, to create their own story behind the image and make a profound and individual bond with it. The craft aspect of making an artwork and the creation process itself is also crucial for me.
