About The Artwork
Dolmen D6 is located near the town of Tynaarlo in the north of the Netherlands. It is an exceptional structure in several respects; first of all because it is still reasonably complete by Dutch standards, since all the large stones are still there. Only the sand and pebble layers that covered it have disappeared. Also special is that all the stones are made of pink granite. It seems that the builders 5,000 years ago were very selective when choosing materials for building their tomb. That pink color is greatly exaggerated in this painting and forms a strong contrast with the green grass. The style is spontaneous and expressionistic. Up close you can see how the structures of the stones and grass have been placed with rapid movements. The subject and the manner of execution are therefore at odds with each other, creating a fascinating whole; modernity and ancient origins meet.
