About The Artwork

DESTROYED BY FIRE AFTER MY HOME WAS TOTALLY BURNT OUT 29th April 2020. The Gods and Heroes of Classical Antiquity are an inspiration to me in Arts, but I Rarely come across Ulysses and even Calypso when I am reading about them /Gods, even in documentaries I don't hear much about Calypso nor Ulysses, and so I thought why not I do a painting with Ulysses and Calypso then after, I started my painting, a few weeks later I came across a painting by Max Beckmann Titled Odysseus/Ulysses and Calypso painted in 1943, it's in Hamburg, Kusthalle. My painting is totally different from Max Beckmann it only as the same Title, Max Beckmann paintings are one of my great inspiration also, so His painting even inspired me more Especially when I came up with the Title then later coming across another artist painting with the same Title painting as his. Calypso, whose name means "she who hides," was a nymph who lived on the island of Ogygia, near Gibraltar. When Ulysses ran aground at Ogygia during his return Voyage from the Trojan War, Calypso detained him there for seven years, promising him immortality in exchange for marriage. Even she, however, could not make Ulysses forget Ithaca or Penelope, and the gods finally compelled her to set him free. This is my painting of Odysseus/Ulysses and Calypso,
